Abstract

The review of An introduction to culture and psychology (Routledge, 2025), by Valery Chirkov, analyzes the work which presents the theory of sociocultural models (SCMs) as a framework for understanding the interdependence between mind and culture. The book examines how these models regulate various domains of life, such as parenting, communication, and acculturation. It is posited that Chirkov's main contribution is to break down the cultural phenomenon into SCMs, or operational analytical units, surpassing the mere cataloging of cultural differences. The review concludes that the publication establishes itself as a rigorous theoretical instrument, offering a methodological roadmap for future empirical research on the dialectic between the psyche and the sociosymbolic environment.
