Complex children: disputes and exchanges of knowledge in a Pediatric Complex Care Unit

This study aims to analyze the understanding of nurses, doctors and mothers of children with complex health conditions, who are dependent on technology, about the value and prestige of the knowledge circulating in a highly complex pediatric hospital environment. This is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, based on focus groups and semi-structured interviews. Based on the participants' narratives about the dynamics of searching for information and building knowledge about pathologies, therapies and patient care, the valuation of knowledge was analyzed in the light of the reflexive approach of Interpretive Anthropology. The narratives show that, even with communication problems, there is a perception that knowledge is exchanged satisfactorily, although the mothers claim that their knowledge about their children's health conditions and care is recognized and valued, and demand more attention to the individuality of the patients — an area in which they believe they have the most knowledge.
