Grounded Theory in Tourism: a field experience

This article describes a field experience using the Grounded Theory method in the context of tourism. The research sought to understand the trajectory of the Regional Governance Instance (IGR) Rota Pantanal Bonito Serra da Bodoquena in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The Straussian approach was used following the guidelines proposed by Corbin and Strauss (2015). To contribute to the discussion about the methodological approach, the work was divided into three parts. The first presents the Grounded Theory method and its principles. The second describes the research carried out, the data that was composed of interviews and documents related to the formalization of the IGR. The last part includes some reflections and difficulties encountered when applying the method. The contribution of the research consists of presenting the procedures adopted to develop a substantive theory using the Grounded Theory method in tourism in order to bring insights to researchers who use and those who intend to use the method. The practical contribution consists of recognizing and overcoming barriers to the use of the method, promoting new research. The method can be a significant approach to developing theories and understanding diverse social phenomena. This study deals with the path taken, the dilemmas and difficulties encountered in using the research method.
