Vício, pecado e culpa cristã em Michel de Montaigne: elogio da sagesse antiga contra a ordotoxia católica

Abstract

In the chapter Du Repentir, in book III of his Essays Montaigne elaborates his critical view of Christian contrition, affirming  himself as a conscience "that is content" with his imperfect human condition in the face of the centrality that the Reformed Church of his time confers on the sentiment of sin and private confession as marks of true devotion. His speech aims to defend himself against accusations of impiety and pride, problematizing the relations between vice, repentance and sacramental confession and taking for itself the values of classical and stoic wisdom, a morality all founded on the internal domain of oneʼs
own moral conscience.
