A influência de Plutarco na visão de Guicciardini sobre Esparta

Abstract

This paper aims to demonstrate the influence of Plutarch on Francesco Guicciardini's understanding of Sparta. It seeks to emphasize the elements that shape Guicciardini's view of Lycurgusʼ legislation and how these were shaped by the characteristics attributed by Plutarch, particularly in his Life of Lycurgus. To achieve this objective, the article is divided into four sections: the first, dedicated to the construction of the Spartan image in Antiquity up to Plutarch's work; the second, focused on Plutarch's influence during the Renaissance in general, with Machiavelli as an example; the third, devoted to Guicciardini's image of Sparta; and finally, the fourth provides additional evidence of Guicciardini's reading of Plutarch. It concludes that Plutarch was fundamental to Guicciardini's perception of Sparta, especially regarding the longevity of Lycurgusʼ legislation and the equality of wealth.
